Always My Brother - Funeral Poem for Brothers
A brother can be many things - a protector, a troublemaker, a best friend, or a quiet constant. He’s someone you grow up beside, someone who knows where you’ve been before you knew who you were becoming. When we lose a brother, we don’t just lose a person. We lose a part of our story, a part of ourselves.
This poem is for anyone carrying the weight of that absence - and holding on to the love that remains.
Always My Brother
You were never one to ask for much,
but you gave more than you ever said.
A quiet strength, a steady hand,
someone I thought would always be there.
We didn’t always need words between us.
Sometimes a look, a laugh, a shared silence
said more than anything else could.
You were part of my beginning-
and now, part of what I carry forward.
Losing you feels like losing a part of my past,
and yet, somehow, you remain-
in the way I stand,
in the way I love,
in the way I try to be better.
You were my brother.
And you still are.
Just not in the way I’d hoped to keep you.
- Luke F
Though his voice is now memory and his footsteps no longer heard, a brother’s presence doesn’t fade. It stays in the spaces he filled, in the stories we tell, and in the quiet moments when we feel him near. He may no longer walk beside us, but he still walks with us — always.
