The Measure of a Man - Funeral Poem For Your Father

Fathers are often the quiet foundations of our lives - not always seeking recognition, but always showing up. They teach us by example, not with speeches, but with actions: how to stand tall in hard times, how to work with purpose, and how to love without needing to say the words out loud. Whether he was the one fixing things around the house, offering a steady hand during uncertain times, or simply being there when it mattered most, a father’s presence leaves an imprint on the heart long after he’s gone.

This poem is written in honour of those fathers - the ones whose strength was quiet, whose kindness was steady, and whose love never wavered. It’s a reflection on what it means to be shaped by a good man, and how we carry that legacy forward.

The Measure of a Man

He never asked for praise or pride,
He simply stood, and lived, and tried.
With quiet strength and steady hand,
He shaped our lives, he took a stand.

He taught us more than words could say-
To face the storm, to find our way.
Through every trial, through joy and strife,
He was the constant in our life.

His laughter echoed warm and low,
A sound we cherished more than know.
And when he spoke, we leaned in near,
Because his voice meant truth and care.

He didn't wear a hero’s face,
But in his love, we found our place.
And now the world feels cold and wide,
Without him walking by our side.

But still, we carry him each day—
In how we live, in what we say.
A father’s love, a quiet guide,
Still holding us, from deep inside.

Losing a father feels like losing a compass - the person who always helped you find your way, even when you didn’t realise it. But his guidance doesn’t end with goodbye. It lives on in the choices we make, the values we keep, and the way we show up for others. Though he may no longer be by our side, the best parts of him remain within us - steady, strong, and forever loved.
